The wetlands of Lima — especially the iconic Pantanos de Villa — are among the most productive and wildlife-rich ecosystems on Peru’s central coast. Fed by a mixture of groundwater, seasonal rains, and coastal mist, these wetlands form an oasis of life surrounded by expanding urban landscapes. Their mosaic of lagoons, reedbeds, coastal marshes, sandy flats and brackish water channels creates a haven for migratory and resident species alike.
What makes this ecosystem so remarkable is its role as a critical stopover point for thousands of migratory birds traveling along the Pacific Flyway. From November to March, the wetlands fill with North American shorebirds, while resident species like the Plumbeous Rail, Peruvian Meadowlark, Many-colored Rush Tyrant and Great Grebe thrive year-round. The dense cattails (totorales) shelter secretive birds, while open water bodies host diving species, herons, and coastal waterfowl.

On our Pantanos de Villa Birding Tour, guests experience this biodiversity up close — scanning the reedbeds for bitterns, watching gulls and terns circle overhead, and admiring the vibrant marshland specialists that make these wetlands one of Lima’s best birding destinations.
To help visitors and nature enthusiasts make the most of their time here, we’ve created a free, easy-to-use field guidefeaturing the wetland fauna most commonly seen on our tours. It includes detailed illustrations, identification tips and ecosystem notes to enhance your understanding of the unique wildlife that depends on these marshes.
