The Santa Eulalia Valley represents one of the most remarkable Andean valley ecosystems near Lima, where rugged canyons, rushing rivers, and steep terraced slopes create a mosaic of habitats that support extraordinary biodiversity. Fed by glacial melt and seasonal rains, the valley sustains patches of high Andean scrub, Polylepis woodlands, and riparian corridors that act as life-lines through the dry inter-Andean landscape. What makes this ecosystem unique is the way it serves as a transition zone, linking the high puna grasslands with the lower valleys, and providing essential feeding, nesting, and migratory grounds for wildlife. Among its highlights are sought-after bird species such as the Black-necked Woodpecker, Great Inca-Finch, and Rusty-bellied Brush-Finch — all Peruvian endemics. The valley also harbors mammals like the Andean Fox and Pampas Cat, as well as a diversity of hummingbirds that thrive in the flowering shrubs. This makes the Santa Eulalia Valley not only a scenic destination, but also a critical refuge for wildlife within the central Andes.
