Overview

Machu Picchu Birding Tour

Machu Picchu is more than Peru's most famous view — the Historic Sanctuary protects a sweep of humid cloud forest along the Urubamba gorge that holds some of Cusco's most wanted birds. Bamboo thickets around Aguas Calientes hide the endemic Inca Wren, fruiting trees pull in the endemic Masked Fruiteater, and the river itself is home to Torrent Ducks and White-capped Dippers, with Andean Cock-of-the-rock leking in the gorge below.

Our 2–3 day itinerary pairs a guided visit to the citadel with unhurried birding along the sanctuary trails and the train corridor — then climbs back over the Abra Málaga pass, where high-elevation Polylepis woodland shelters Royal Cinclodes and White-browed Tit-Spinetail, two of the rarest birds in the Andes.
