Huacarpay Lake
Ringed by reedbeds and dry Andean slopes 45 minutes southeast of Cusco, Huacarpay Lake packs more birding per hour than almost anywhere in the region. The stars are two Peruvian endemics: the huge Bearded Mountaineer, which works the tree-tobacco flowers along the lake edge, and the skulking Rusty-fronted Canastero of the surrounding scrub.
Around them: Puna and Yellow-billed Teal, Plumbeous Rail, Wren-like Rushbird and Many-colored Rush-Tyrant in the reeds, Andean Negrito on the shorelines, and Cinereous Harrier or Aplomado Falcon hunting the marsh. It pairs naturally with our Piuray Lagoon half-day for a full Cusco wetlands day.
