Pantanos de Villa & Pucusana – Birding Lima Tours: Coastal Wetlands & Seabirds

Begin your day with one of the most complete Birding Lima Tours, exploring three top hotspots for coastal, wetland, and desert-valley birds: Pantanos de Villa, Pucusana, and the Lurín River. This full-day tour is ideal for birders on a short stay in Lima who want to maximize species diversity and enjoy three distinct ecosystems in a single itinerary.

Pantanos de Villa – Lima’s Only Protected Wetland & a Bird Migration Hub

We start early in the morning, avoiding traffic and heading straight to Pantanos de Villa, the only protected area within Lima’s city limits. Declared a Ramsar Site in 1997, this network of coastal lagoons, marshes, and totora reedbeds forms a key migratory corridor along the Peruvian coast.
With over 130 bird species recorded そして 40+ species regularly seen in just one visit, it is one of the essential stops for birdwatching in Lima.

    Birding the Coastal Lagoon

Our first observation point is a lagoon beside the beach, where we search for:

    • Great Grebe

    • Pied-billed Grebe

    • Cinnamon Teal

    • White-cheeked Pintail

    • Andean Duck

    • Gray-hooded Gull

    • Gray Gull

    • Seasonal presence of Andean Gull

A quick scan of the ocean often reveals classic Humboldt Current seabirds such as:

    • Peruvian Pelican

    • Peruvian Booby

    • Guanay Cormorant

This section of the reserve provides excellent photographic opportunities and a high species count early in the day.

Reedbeds & Marsh Ponds – Rushbirds, Rails & More

As the morning warms, we explore ponds surrounded by dense totora reeds, a favorite habitat for:

    • Many-colored Rush-Tyrant

    • Wren-like Rushbird

We then search for more secretive marsh specialists:

    • Plumbeous Rail

    • Least Bittern

On our return to the vehicle, we stop at a grassland clearing where the Peruvian Thick-knee is often found.

Pantanos de Villa is one of the most rewarding wetland stops included in our Birding Lima Tours.

Pucusana – Seabirds, Penguins & Marine Otters

We continue the tour by driving 60 km south to Pucusana, a charming fishing village protected by an offshore island. From here, we take a short boat trip around the island to enjoy close views of Peru’s most iconic Humboldt Current seabirds:

    • Peruvian Pelican

    • Peruvian Booby

    • Guanay Cormorant

    • Red-legged Cormorant

    • Blackish Oystercatcher

    • Belcher’s Gull

    • Humboldt Penguin

    • Inca Tern (one of the world’s most striking terns)

    • Surf Cinclodes (Peruvian endemic)

The waters around Pucusana also host a small colony of South American Sea-lions.
The rocky coastline is habitat for the endangered Marine Otter, one of the smallest otter species in the world—often a highlight for visitors.

This marine section is a signature element of our coastal Birding Lima Tours.

Final Stop – Birding the Lurín River Valley

After the boat trip, we enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before heading to the Lurín River, our final birding site. This dry valley habitat contrasts sharply with the wetlands and marine ecosystems visited earlier.

Here, we search for the rufescens subspecies of Bran-colored Flycatcher—a taxon that may eventually be split into a separate species.

Additional birds in this area include:

    • Croaking Ground-dove

    • Amazilia Hummingbird

    • Peruvian Sheartail

    • Purple-collared Woodstar

    • Long-tailed Mockingbird

    • Scrub Blackbird

    • Harris’s Hawk

    • Peruvian Meadowlark

This stop adds desert-valley and riparian species to your day list, giving you a complete sampling of the birdlife of Lima in a single tour.
