Exploring the Seabirds of Lima: Full Pelagic vs Mini-Pelagic with Wild Andes Tours

If you’re drawn to the drama of oceanic birdlife, the pelagic birding experience off the coast of Lima is a must. At ワイルドアンデストラベル, we offer two kinds of pelagic outings: a full Pelagic trip—our deepest foray into offshore waters—and a Mini-Pelagic (that is accompanied with some coastal birding at the Pucusana Village and nearby valleys) option that gives a taste of seabirding with fewer hours and less distance. Below is a guide to help your readers understand which trip suits them best.

What is a (True) Pelagic Birding Trip?

Pelagic birding means leaving the protection of coastal waters to explore the open ocean, beyond where most seabirds and marine mammals forage. Out there, you’ll find species rarely or never seen from shore: storm-petrels, shearwaters, jaegers, skuas, and more. Success depends heavily on sea conditions, chumming, and knowing where to go.

On the Peruvian coast, the continental shelf lies some distance offshore, and many of the more “pelagic-only” species only appear once you are 25–30 nautical miles from land (or more). For example, sightings of Waved Albatross, storm-petrels, and distant Pterodroma species around ~15+ nautical miles or more from Lima.

Therefore, the difference between a “mini-pelagic” and a full pelagic often lies in how far you travel out to sea (and how long you stay there).

 

Full Pelagic Trip

Our Full Pelagic Trip is a full-day offshore birding adventure designed for those who want to experience true open-ocean wildlife. Departing from the Coastal Town of Pucusana, south of Lima, we travel roughly 25 nautical miles out to sea—far beyond the continental shelf—where nutrient-rich Humboldt Current waters attract a remarkable variety of strictly pelagic species. Along the way, we pass the Pucusana Isle, home to sea lions and coastal seabirds such as Inca Terns, Peruvian Boobies and Humboldt Penguins. Once offshore, chances increase for encountering deeper-water specialists including storm-petrels, shearwaters, skuas, jaegers, Sabine’s Gulls, and occasional petrels or albatrosses, as well as dolphins and seasonal whales. The two main specialties of this tour are the Waved Albatross and the Hornby’s (Ringed) Storm-Petrel. 

Mini-Pelagic Trip

Our Mini-Pelagic Trip is a shorter offshore experience that combines the best of Peru’s rich coastal birdlife with a taste of true pelagic birding. Departing from Pucusana, we navigate out to about 10 nautical miles into the Pacific, passing by guano islands where we observe sea lions and iconic coastal species such as Inca Terns, Peruvian Boobies, Red-legged そして Guanay Cormorants, Humboldt Penguins, 、そして Peruvian Pelicans. Once offshore, we enter waters frequented by remarkable seabirds including Wedge-rumped Storm-Petrel, Peruvian Diving-Petrel, White-chinned Petrel, 、そして Sooty and Pink-footed Shearwaters, as well as gulls, skuas, and jaegers. 

Pucusana Coastal Birding

Pucusana is one of Lima’s richest coastal birding hotspots and serves as the starting point for both our full pelagic and mini-pelagic tours. This traditional fishing port is surrounded by rocky cliffs, islets, and calm inshore waters that host an impressive mix of resident and breeding seabirds. Here, visitors can easily observe Humboldt Penguins, Red-legged and Guanay Cormorants, Peruvian Boobies, Peruvian Pelicans, and the striking Inca Tern, often at very close range. The harbor and surrounding shoreline also provide opportunities to spot species such as Blackish Oystercatcher, Surf Cinclodes, and various coastal migrants depending on the season. Combined with views of South-American Sea-Lions and the endangered Marine Otter, Pucusana offers an authentic and highly productive coastal birding experience before heading offshore.

Lurin Valley

The Lurín Valley adds a unique inland birding element exclusive to our mini-pelagic trip, offering a contrasting habitat to the marine environment. This fertile valley of desert scrub, agricultural fields, and riparian vegetation hosts a diverse array of terrestrial and semi-arid species not seen along the coast. Birders can encounter raptors like the Harris’s Hawk, as well as charismatic residents such as the Pacific Pygmy-Owl, Amazilia Hummingbird, Croaking Ground-Dove, Vermilion Flycatcher, 、そして Long-tailed Mockingbird. This stop provides excellent photographic and birding opportunities, rounding out the mini-pelagic with a productive terrestrial extension before returning to Lima
