FREE PDF: Fauna of the Humboldt Current Marine Ecosystem

The Pacific coast off central and southern Peru, offers one of the most fascinating marine ecosystems in South America — where the cold, nutrient-rich currents of the Humboldt Current drive high productivity, and a mosaic of habitats from rocky shores to kelp forests supports extraordinary wildlife.

This coastline, shaped by steep cliffs, offshore islets, protected coves, and expansive kelp beds, forms a unique transition zone between open ocean, coastal reefs and inland wetlands. It provides feeding, resting and breeding grounds for seabirds, marine mammals, fish, and invertebrates alike.

All along the Humboldt Current, you will find thriving populations of seabirds — think of charismatic species such as the Inca Tern and the grounded yet elegant Humboldt Penguin. Add to that the sight of sea lions hauled out on offshore rocks, and — if lucky — glimpses of the elusive and critically endangered Marine Otter exploring the kelp beds.

We have developed our own field-guide dedicated to the marine fauna of this region, and we’re excited to offer it as a free PDF to help deepen your understanding and connection to this rich ecosystem. It features detailed in-house illustrations and notes for many of the animals you’ll encounter in this ecosystem.
