Lima’s Endemic Birds – Part 1: The Surf Cinclodes (Cinclodes taczanowskii)

Discovering the Avian Gems of Peru’s Coastline with Wild Andes Tours

Peru is a global powerhouse of biodiversity, and Lima—despite being one of the largest cities in South America—hosts an astonishing number of endemic and specialty birds. With this post, we proudly launch our new Wild Andes Tours blog series: “Endemics of Lima.” Each entry will showcase one of the unique bird species found only in Peru, exploring their natural history, ecological significance, and the best places to find them in the wild.

Today, we begin with one of Lima’s most charismatic coastal specialists:

Meet the Surf Cinclodes – A Bird Built for the Waves

The Surf Cinclodes (Cinclodes taczanowskii) is a hardy, wave-loving passerine that lives almost exclusively on the rocky, wave-battered shores of central and southern Peru. Endemic to our coastline, this species is a master of survival in some of the most extreme and dynamic microhabitats in the region.

With its streaked brown plumage, strong legs, and slightly decurved bill, the Surf Cinclodes is perfectly adapted to life in the spray zone. Unlike most songbirds, it spends much of its time foraging right at the edge of breaking waves, picking out small crustaceans, intertidal invertebrates, and mollusks from cracks in the rock. Watching one dodge waves as it probes the slippery shoreline is one of the great pleasures of birding in coastal Lima.

Ecology & Behavior: Life in the Surf

This species thrives in an environment where few other birds dare to feed. The Surf Cinclodes:

  • Occupies rocky intertidal zones, often staying just centimeters away from crashing surf

  • Feeds on marine invertebrates, making it Peru’s only intertidal foraging passerines

  • Nests among rock crevices, offering protection from predators and waves

  • Can be surprisingly confiding, allowing great views for photographers and birders

Its presence is an indicator of healthy intertidal ecosystems—ecosystems increasingly threatened by coastal development, pollution, and habitat disturbance. That makes responsible ecotourism, education, and conservation awareness all the more important.

Where to See the Surf Cinclodes in Lima

The Surf Cinclodes is a common target in several of our world-class coastal birding experiences. Fortunately, it is one of the most reliable endemic species for visitors traveling with us.

Pucusana Fishing Village

This is arguably the best place in Peru to enjoy the Surf Cinclodes. The rocky breakwaters and natural cliffs around the harbor provide textbook habitat. On our Pantanos de Villa & Pucusana Birding Tour, the Surf Cinclodes is a near guarantee, often accompanied by Guanay Cormorants, Belcher’s Gulls, Red-legged Cormorants, and the charismatic Humboldt Penguin.

This site allows natural, unobstructed encounters with the species and are easily accessible from Lima, making them ideal options for travelers looking to add endemics to their life list during a short stay.
