The lomas ecosystem is a truly exceptional fog-fed oasis found along Peru’s coastal desert, where the cold waters of the Pacific and seasonal mist enable patches of vegetation to thrive in otherwise parched terrain. In these steep coastal hills, moisture condenses during the cooler months (roughly May–September) to nourish a dwarf-forest and shrubland environment, which then largely dries out in the hot season. What makes this ecosystem unique is not just its rarity — surviving on fog rather than rainfall — but the way it supports a dynamic seasonal migration of animals from the Andes down to the coast, using this “mist oasis” as feeding and hunting grounds. Fauna here include several endemics and specialists: birds such as the Cactus Canastero, the Coastal Miner and Raimondi’s Yellow‑finch live among the rocky slopes or low vegetation of the lomas. Mammals like the Sechuran Fox and even the elusive Pampas Cat have been recorded in this habitat, making it a surprising haven of wildlife given its location in one of the driest deserts on the planet.

At Wild Andes Tours, our excursions into the lomas allow travelers to experience this remarkable mist-fed ecosystem firsthand, exploring its unique landscapes and encountering its rare wildlife. Because many of the species here are highly specialized and often sought after by birders and nature enthusiasts — it is essential to have a quick, reliable reference to identify them in the field. To enrich our guests’ experience, we have created our own in-house field guide specifically for the lomas, designed to be both practical and easy to use. This guide highlights the most characteristic species, with accurate illustrations, ensuring that visitors can fully appreciate the biodiversity and uniqueness of this fragile yet thriving ecosystem during their tour.
