D<\/p><h4>Day 2: Lima, Pantanos de Villa &amp; Pucusana<\/h4><p>We start our tour early in the morning in order to avoid the rush hour and we head directly to the Pantanos de Villa Reserve. The Villa marshes is the only protected area within the city limits of Lima. It was declared a RAMSAR (International Convention of Wetlands) site in 1997. This complex of lagoons, pools and marsh areas made up of totora reed clumps, are part of a migratory corridor and resting point for several bird species along the Peruvian coast. More than 130 bird species have been recorded here, and at least 40 species can be seen on a single visit.<\/p><p>Our first stop within the reserve take us to a coastal lagoon next to the beach where we will be looking for birds like \u200b<b>Great Grebe<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Pied-billed Grebe<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Cinnamon Teal<\/b>,\u200b\u00a0<b>White-cheeked Pintail<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Andean Duck<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Gray-hooded Gull<\/b>\u200b and \u200b<b>Gray Gull<\/b>\u200b. Depending on the season sometimes we find small numbers of \u200b<b>Andean Gulls<\/b>\u200b in this area. A quick scan from the seashore will allow us to observe species like\u00a0<b>P<\/b>\u200b<b>eruvian Pelican<\/b>,\u200b\u00a0<b>Peruvian Boobies<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Guanay Cormorants<\/b>\u200b flying by, and sometimes even \u200b<b>Peruvian Diving-Petrels<\/b>\u200b.<\/p><p>As the day starts to warm up we move to our next location, a group of small ponds surrounded by totora reeds. This vegetation is the habitat of two species, the\u00a0<b>Many-colored Rush-Tyrant<\/b>\u200b and the \u200b<b>Wren-like Rushbird<\/b>.\u200b After we see these targets we\u2019ll try to find some rarer birds like\u00a0<b>P<\/b>\u200b<b>lumbeous Rail<\/b>\u200b and \u200b<b>Least Bittern<\/b>\u200b. On the trail back to our car we will stop for a moment to look for \u200b<b>Peruvian Thick-knees<\/b>\u200b in an open area covered with grass.<\/p><p>Our next stop is the fishing village of Pucusana, about 60 Km (38 miles) south of Lima. Pucusana is located inside a small cove and protected by an island just in front of the town. From here we will take a boat to navigate the waters around the island where we will have close views of some of the Humboldt current specialties like \u200b<b>Peruvian Pelican<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Peruvian Boobie<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Guanay Cormorant<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Red-legged Cormorant<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Blackish Oystercatcher<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Belcher\u2019s Gull<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Humboldt Penguins<\/b>,\u200b the stunning \u200b<b>Inca Terns<\/b>\u200b and the endemic \u200b<b>Surf Cinclodes<\/b>.\u200b<\/p><p>Continuing with the navigation we visit a small colony of\u00a0<b>S<\/b>\u200b<b>outh American Sea Lions<\/b>.\u200b This rocky coast is also the habitat of the endangered \u200b<b>Marine Otter<\/b>\u200b, one of the smallest otter species in the world.<\/p><p>After our boat trip we will have lunch at a local restaurant. Then we\u2019ll move to our next location \u200bat the Lurin river. This area is home to the\u00a0<i>r<\/i>\u200b<i>ufescens<\/i>\u00a0subspecies of\u00a0<b>Bran-colored Flycatche<\/b>r\u200b, that might be split in the future. Other species that we can observe in this area includes\u00a0<b>C<\/b>\u200b<b>roaking Ground-dove<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Amazilia Hummingbird<\/b>\u200b,\u00a0<b>Long-tailed Mockingbird<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Scrub Blackbird<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Harris\u2019s Hawk<\/b>\u200b and \u200b<b>Peruvian Meadowlark<\/b>\u200b.<\/p><p>Night at Miraflores. B, L, D<\/p><h4>Day 3: Lima and Lomas de Lachay National Reserve<\/h4><p>We will depart early in the morning towards Lomas de Lachay located 100 km (65 miles) north of Lima. On the way to the reserve we will scan the agricultural fields looking for\u00a0<b>Peruvian Thick-knees<\/b>\u200b. After scoring this bird we enter the reserve. The landscape in this area looks pretty desertic, but this is the habitat of the endemic\u00a0<b>C<\/b>\u200b<b>oastal Miner<\/b>\u200b and\u00a0<b>Least Seedsnipe<\/b>\u200b. Further on we will notice how the vegetation starts to appear on both sides along the road. Birds like the uncommon austral migrant \u200b<b>Tawny-throated Dotterel<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Yellowish Pipits<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Burrowing Owls<\/b>\u200b and \u200b<b>Peruvian Meadowlarks<\/b>\u200b prefer this open habitat with low vegetation. We will pay attention to the raptors here, as the\u00a0<b>Variable Hawks<\/b>\u200b and \u200b<b>Black-chested Buzzard-Eagles<\/b>\u200b constantly soars above these plains.<\/p><p>Once we enter the main part of the reserve the landscape changes dramatically, mountains covered with dense vegetation and trees growing along the creeks, it\u2019s hard to imagine that the desert is only a couple of miles away. The trees in this valley are the place to look for the \u200b<i>auricularis\u00a0<\/i>subspecies of\u00a0<b>M<\/b>\u200b<b>asked Yellowthroat<\/b>\u200b, sometimes considered a separate species called\u00a0<b>B<\/b>\u200b<b>lack-lored Yellowthroat<\/b>\u200b.<\/p><p>We\u2019ll walk along a trail to a waterhole where flocks of birds gather together to drink as this is the only permanent water source in the reserve. It\u2019s not uncommon to see\u00a0<b>Andean Tinamous<\/b>\u200b crossing the trail in this area early in the morning. Along the trail to the water hole we can observe species like\u00a0<b>M<\/b>\u200b<b>ountain Parakeets<\/b>, \u200b\u200b<b>PeruvianSheartail<\/b>,\u200b\u00a0<b>Oasis Hummingbird<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Band-tailed Sierra-finch<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Collared Warbling-finch<\/b>\u200b and the endemic \u200b<b>Raimondi\u2019s Yellow-finch<\/b>.\u200b<\/p><p>After walking these trails we\u2019ll drive to Quebrada Guayabito located on the dry side of the reserve. This area is home to the endemic \u200b<b>Cactus Canastero<\/b>\u200b and also\u00a0<b>Short-tailed Field Tyrant<\/b>\u200b and\u00a0<b>G<\/b>\u200b<b>rayish Miner<\/b>\u200b.<\/p><div class=\"gdlr-core-toggle-box-item-tab clearfix  gdlr-core-active\"><div class=\"gdlr-core-toggle-box-item-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"gdlr-core-toggle-box-item-content\"><p>Overnight at Miraflores. B, L, D<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-core-toggle-box-item-tab clearfix  gdlr-core-active\"><div class=\"gdlr-core-toggle-box-item-icon gdlr-core-js gdlr-core-skin-icon \"><h4>Day 4: Flight from Lima to Tarapoto<\/h4><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-core-toggle-box-item-content-wrapper\"><p>Early flight to Tarapoto and then drive to the Waqanki Lodge located outside the city of Moyobamba. Moyobamba is the capital city of the orchids in Peru, it\u2019s been estimated that the region holds around 2,000 different species. For those interested in macro photography there is an interesting collection of orchids at the gardens of our lodge that can be visited at any time.<\/p><p>About 400 species of birds live in the forests of the reserve and 18 species of hummingbirds visit the feeders close to the lodge. We will spend the morning photographing some of these birds at the feeders. The most common species that visit the feeders are \u200b<b>Rufous-crested Coquette<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>White-necked Jacobin<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Brown Violetear<\/b>\u200b,\u00a0<b>Black-throated Mango<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Blue-tailed Emerald<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Gray-breasted Sabrewing<\/b>,\u200b\u00a0<b>Fork-tailed Woodnymph<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Sapphire-spangled Emerald<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Golden-tailed Sapphire<\/b>,\u200b\u00a0<b>White-chinned Sapphire<\/b>\u200b and\u00a0<b>B<\/b>\u200b<b>lack-throated Hermit<\/b><i>.<\/i><\/p><p>During the night we will try to find owls around the lodge, the most frequent species in this area includes \u200b<b>Band-bellied Owl<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Striped Owl<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Tropical Screech-Owl<\/b>\u200b and\u00a0<b>Black-banded Owl<\/b>\u200b. There is also a location for\u00a0<b>S<\/b>\u200b<b>tygian Owl<\/b>\u200b, but is further away and the owl is not always present.<\/p><p>Overnight at Waqanki Lodge in Moyobamba. B, L, D<\/p><h4>Day 5: Waqanki Lodge &amp; Surroundings<\/h4><p>Early in the morning we will set up two hides on the shore of a lagoon located about 30 minutes from the lodge. Here we will photograph the uncommon and secretive\u00a0<b>M<\/b>\u200b<b>asked Duck<\/b>\u200b. Other birds that can be seen in this area includes\u00a0<b>R<\/b>\u200b<b>usty-backed Antwren<\/b>,\u200b\u00a0<b>Wedge-tailed Grass-finch<\/b>\u200b and\u00a0<b>R<\/b>\u200b<b>usset-crowned Crake<\/b>.\u200b<\/p><p>We will spend the rest of the morning walking on the trails around the lodge. The forest in this area is a good place to photograph\u00a0<b>F<\/b>\u200b<b>iery-throated Fruiteater<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Fiery-capped Manakin<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Peruvian Warbling Antbird<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Lafresnaye\u2019s Piculet<\/b>\u200b and the endemic\u00a0<b>Mishana Tyrannulet,<\/b>\u200b among other species.<\/p><p>During the night we can try to locate some of the owl species that we might have missed the night before.<\/p><p>Overnight at Waqanki Lodge in Moyobamba. B, L, D.<\/p><h4>Day 6: Arena Blanca Reserve &amp; Abra Patricia<\/h4><p>Early morning drive to the Arena Blanca Reserve on our way to Abra Patricia. This reserve is located on the foothills of the Andes and it has feeding stations for hummingbirds and tinamous. Some of the most interesting species that use the feeders includes \u200b<b>Rufous-breasted Wood-Quail<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Cinereous Tinamou<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Little Tinamou<\/b>,\u200b\u00a0<b>Gray-necked Wood-Rail<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Orange-billed Sparrow<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Amethyst Woodstar<\/b>,\u200b\u00a0<b>Blue-fronted Lancebill<\/b>\u200b and\u00a0<b>W<\/b>\u200b<b>ire-crested Thorntail<\/b>\u200b. On the trees around the feeders is not uncommon to see \u200b<b>Golden-collared Toucanets<\/b>\u200b and \u200b<b>Lettered Aracaris<\/b>.\u200b<\/p><p>After we photograph the interesting birds of this reserve we will head up towards the Owlet Lodge located in the Abra Patricia Reserve. On route we might stop at the Alto Nieva river to search for \u200b<b>Torrent Ducks<\/b>\u200b and the endemic\u200b\u00a0<b>Lulu\u2019s Tody-tyrant<\/b>\u200b.<\/p><p>Once on the lodge we will spend the rest of the afternoon on the hummingbird feeders where \u200b<b>Bronzy Inca<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Collared Inca<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Long-tailed Sylph<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Speckled Hummingbird<\/b>,\u200b\u00a0<b>White-bellied Woodstar<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Fawn-breasted Brilliant<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Emerald-bellied Puffleg<\/b>\u200b and sometimes the uncommon \u200b<b>Sword-billed Hummingbird<\/b>\u200b can be seen. Some mammals like the \u200b<b>Tayra\u00a0<\/b>\u200b(a relative to the weasels) and\u00a0<b>B<\/b>\u200b<b>lack Agoutis<\/b>\u200b visit a feeding station and are easy to photograph.<\/p><p>Depending on the weather we might try to visit the Fundo Alto Nieva to try to photograph the almost mythical\u00a0<b>L<\/b>\u200b<b>ong-whiskered Owlet<\/b>\u200b and the uncommon\u00a0<b>Cinnamon Screech-Owl<\/b>\u200b.<\/p><p>Overnight at Owlet Lodge in Abra Patricia. B, L, D.<\/p><h4>Day 7:\u00a0 Abra Patricia<\/h4><p>Early in the morning we will search for mixed species flocks along the highway on route to the Fundo Alto Nieva. These impressive flocks usually have many different species of birds like \u200b<b>Flame-faced Tanager<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Beryl-spangled Tanager<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Saffron-crowned Tanager<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Blue-winged Mountain Tanager<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Blue-and-black Tanager<\/b>,\u200b the endemic\u00a0<b>Yellow-scarfed Tanager<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>White-collared Jay<\/b>\u200b,\u200b\u00a0<b>Montane Woodcreeper<\/b>\u200b and\u00a0<b>Crimson-mantled Woodpeckers<\/b>.\u200b We will stop at another location for\u00a0<b>R<\/b>\u200b<b>oyal Sunangel<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Bar-winged Wood-wren<\/b>\u200b and\u00a0<b>W<\/b>\u200b<b>hite-capped Tanagers<\/b>.\u200b<\/p><p>Fundo Alto Nieva has hummingbird feeders that attract some uncommon species like\u00a0<b>Rufous-vented Whitetip<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Greenish Puffleg<\/b>\u200b and\u00a0<b>B<\/b>\u200b<b>ooted Racket-tail<\/b>.\u200b Also we will have the opportunity tu photograph a couple of endemic antpitta species,\u00a0<strong>Rusty-tinged<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Ochre-fronted Antpittas<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Then return to the lodge for lunch. We will spend the rest of the day working the station grounds searching for more tanager mixed flocks and the several hummingbird species that visit the feeders.<\/p><p>During the night we might try again for\u200b\u00a0<b>Long-whiskered Owlet<\/b>\u200b on Fundo Alto Nieva or\u00a0<b>White-throated Screech-Owls<\/b>\u200b around the lodge.<\/p><p>Overnight at Owlet Lodge in Abra Patricia. The main target is the spectacular \u200b<b>Marvelous Spatuletail<\/b>\u200b, but the feeders of this reserve also attract other species like \u200b<b>Little Woodstar<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Green-tailed Trainbearer<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Green Violetear\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0<b>Andean Emerald<\/b>\u200b.<\/p><p>During the night we will explore a nearby location for \u200b<b>Buff-fronted Owl<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Koepcke\u2019s Screech-Owl<\/b>\u200b and the \u200b<i>roboratus\u00a0<\/i>race of \u200b<b>West-Peruvian Screech-Owl<\/b>.\u200b<\/p><p>Overnight at Huembo Lodge. With a little patience we might see some of the species that forage close to the canopy and mid level of the forest like \u200b<b>Chestnut-breasted Chlorophonia<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Blue-naped Chlorophonia<\/b>,\u200b\u00a0<b>Grass-green Tanager<\/b>\u200b, \u200b<b>Chestnut-crested Cotinga<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Rufous Spinetail<\/b>,\u200b\u00a0<b>Black-throated Tody-tyrant<\/b>,\u200b and \u200b<b>Green-and-black Fruiteater<\/b>\u200b.<\/p><p>Overnight at Owlet Lodge in Abra Patricia. B, L, D.<\/p><h4>Day 10:\u00a0 Tarapoto<\/h4><p>Early morning drive to Tarapoto. On route we will make a short stop at a bridge that has a small colony of \u200b<b>Oilbirds<\/b>\u200b. We will arrive at our hotel at Tarapoto for lunch and then we will visit the \u200b<i>Ricuricocha\u00a0<\/i>lake in the afternoon. Here we will use our hides again in order to photograph \u200b<b>Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Comb Ducks<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Wattled Jacanas\u00a0<\/b>and other species of waterbirds. The forest nearby is a good place for\u00a0<b>Planalto Hermit<\/b>\u200b, but there aren\u2019t any feeders in the area.<\/p><p>Overnight at Tucan Suites, Tarapoto. B, L, D.<\/p><h4>Day 11:\u00a0 Flight from Tarapoto to Lima<\/h4><p>Today we have the first hours of the morning to explore the tropical forest of \u201cCerro Escalera Conservation Area\u201d, located in the mountains above Tarapoto. In this area we will look for some restricted range species like\u00a0<b>P<\/b>\u200b<b>lumbeous Euphonia<\/b>,\u200b \u200b<b>Dotted Tanager<\/b>\u200b and the endemic \u200b<b>Koepcke\u2019s Hermit<\/b><i>.<\/i>\u200b This place is also a great spot for some colorful tanagers like \u200b<b>Paradise<\/b>\u200b,\u200b\u00a0<b>Bay-headed and Swallow Tanagers<\/b>.\u200b Other lowland tropical birds like \u200b<b>Golden-collared Toucanet\u00a0<\/b>a\u200bnd\u00a0<b>W<\/b>\u200b<b>hite-throated Toucan<\/b>\u200b are not uncommon around her<\/p><p>Later we will visit the ACONABIKH reserve that has a very nice set of hummingbird feeders that provide a unique opportunity to photograph species like\u00a0<b>G<\/b>\u200b<b>ould\u2019s Jewelfront<\/b>\u200b and
